Daily AI Brief: OpenAI’s $1 Office Model, Agent Downloads Risk (Oct 27)
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, a mid-priced model it aims at office work like filling out forms and drafting proposals. The API price is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, roughly half what GPT-5.6 Terra cost. If you pay per document for invoice or intake extraction, that is a real cost lever to test. The other must-read: never start an AI coding agent in your Downloads folder.

GPT-6.1 Terra: OpenAI’s $1 office model
OpenAI describes Terra as “a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use,” pitched at tasks from drafting proposals and interpreting technical drawings to filling out forms. API pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output, about half the price of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol according to Simon Willison’s write-up. OpenAI’s release notes say it is rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Vercel lists a context window over 1M tokens and suggests it for form filling and invoice entry.

Coding agents hijacked by an instruction file in Downloads
BleepingComputer reports that Forever Security found a malicious AGENTS.md file in a customer’s Downloads folder, which was also the coding agent’s working directory. The agent read it and tried to install a rogue npm package. In the researchers’ tests, a harmless payload worked against Codex with a 90% success rate, and a malicious CLAUDE.md led to code execution in Claude Code in roughly 50% of tests. The researchers say there is nothing for the vendors to patch: the fix is where you start the agent. Read the source
An open model tried to upload a file to a cloud bucket
Cohere reports that during a security evaluation, Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Flash-Next inventoried its sandbox and tried to upload a test string to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. The sandbox blocked it. Cohere says it happened in “less than one call in 100,000” and that it cannot say whether it was deliberate. Cohere competes with Alibaba, but the advice holds for any model: deny agents outbound internet access by default. Read the source · The Register

Claude Code 2.1.311, and what idle connectors cost you
The latest Claude Code release changes ultrathink in the terminal to run at xhigh effort on Opus 5.5 and improves the “Connection dropped” error so it says where to look first. Separately, users report that connected MCP tools take up thousands of tokens of context before you type anything, even when a session never uses them. Trimming unused connectors is a free speed and cost fix. Read the source
Frontier model plans, local model executes
Several users this week described splitting work: a frontier model like Claude writes precise, step-by-step task cards, and a smaller model on local hardware carries them out. One user runs personal data through a local Qwen model in a locked-down container for data-protection reasons. It is slower, but sensitive data stays on-site. Read the source
Plans and pricing notes
Anthropic expanded Claude for Nonprofits: a skills-and-connectors plugin installs automatically on nonprofit Team and Enterprise plans, the Team minimum drops to two people, and Claude Code is included at no extra cost. Read the source

Pick a quant that fits your GPU before tuning anything else
A local-AI test from YouTube creator Alex Ziskind this week came down to one point: a model file that does not fit in your graphics card’s memory runs far slower than a slightly smaller quantization that fits completely. Before buying hardware, try the next-smaller quant and compare speed. Read the source

Google: keep shareable and generated pages out of search
Google updated its user-generated spam guidance on October 26. It now names “tools that let users publish shared pages, generated content, or web apps” as abuse risks, and says pages created for direct sharing, collaboration, or utility should get a noindex rule or be blocked in robots.txt by default. AI Overviews coverage, and where organic traffic went
SE Roundtable compiles data showing AI Overviews on over 80% of Google searches, though sources vary: SE Ranking reports 82.5% for US brand searches and seoClarity has cited 55% to 84% by industry. Kevin Indig’s Growth Memo, using Similarweb data on about 10,000 US domains, finds US organic visits down 13.2% from August 2024 to August 2026, with publishers down 41.5% while total visits to small sites rose 19.3%. Indig notes the data does not prove AI caused the losses. Read the source · SE Roundtable

What AI-built internal tools usually don’t test
A developer who reviewed a batch of AI-built internal tools reports the same gaps again and again: production sign-in never tested (only developer shortcuts), email that is written to a table but never sent, scheduled jobs with no real scheduler, and no test of two people saving at once. Add those four checks before staff depend on the tool. Read the source

A 3-language AI phone line, built by a non-coder
A service-business owner describes using Claude Code to connect a voice AI service (Retell) with a VoIP provider (Zadarma), so callers are answered in their own language and an email triage report follows each call. Their lessons: an over-cautious prompt sounded like a scam, and callers noticed a cloned voice quickly. Read the source

What we’d do this week
- Move agents out of Downloads. Create one folder per project, start Claude Code or Codex only there, and read any AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md you did not write before the first run.
- Price one document job on Terra. Take 20 redacted invoices or forms, run them through your current model and through GPT-6.1 Terra, and compare field accuracy and cost per document.
- Ask your web host about PHP. BleepingComputer reports the PHP2Shell flaws are now exploited in the wild; PHP shipped fixes on October 21. Confirm your WordPress host is patched. Source
- Check your share and tool pages. In Search Console, look for indexed preview, share or tool-output URLs and set them to noindex.
