Daily AI Brief: Claude API Credits, Cheap Decision AI (Oct 23)

The most useful change today is a price change. Anthropic now gives Claude Max and Team subscribers monthly API credits: $20 per Team Standard seat, $100 per Premium seat (capped at $500 per team), and $100 or $200 on Max. If your office already pays for Claude Team, that money can run small automations at no extra cost. Credits expire every billing cycle, so claim them now.

Claude Max and Team plans now include monthly API credits

According to Anthropic’s Help Center, Max 5x gets $100 a month and Max 20x $200. Team plans get $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 (Anthropic’s example: three Standard plus two Premium seats is $260). Credits work for the Claude API, Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK, but not interactive Claude Code, extra usage, or Claude on Bedrock, Vertex AI or Foundry. You need seven days on an eligible plan, then an owner links one Console organization under Billing > API credits. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, and Free, Pro and Enterprise plans aren’t eligible. Read the source.

Decision models: cheap AI for yes/no and sorting

OpenAI made its Decisions API generally available on October 22. It answers bounded questions (a 0 to 1 probability, a pick from your options, or a score), up to 400 questions per request, on GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI lists $0.10 per million input tokens, $0.01 cached, and no output-token charge. Vercel has Baseten’s Mammoth-1 (27B) and Elephant-1 (9B) decision models free on AI Gateway until October 27, and Ollama’s v0.40.9 adds d3 decision models (2B to 27B) that run locally. These are the right tool for routing an inbox or tagging leads, where a full chat model is overkill. Read the source.

Agent Skills and Open Responses go to the Agentic AI Foundation

Anthropic donated the Agent Skills standard, including its name, GitHub organization and agentskills.io, to the Linux Foundation’s Agentic AI Foundation. Anthropic says more than 70 platforms have integrated it, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, and that 1 million skills have been published. The New Stack reports OpenAI is donating its Open Responses API spec to the same foundation; Anthropic isn’t listed as a supporter. Nothing changes in the products today, but skills you write now should keep working across tools. Read the source.

Model routing cuts agent cost

The New Stack reports that LangChain’s router in its Open SWE coding agent cut median LLM cost per thread from $2.61 to $0.94 (64%) across 973 threads, sending 90% of requests to the two cheaper model tiers. The merged-PR rate was 29.2% against 27.3% for the control, a difference the article says wasn’t statistically significant. The lesson for small teams: most agent steps don’t need the top model. Hermes Agent v0.22.5: send subagents to different models

The v0.22.5 release (81 merged PRs since v0.22.4) adds pluggable delegation backends that route subagents by model map or profile, usage-window plan gauges, a reworked Nous sign-in, a hermes import-agent command with OpenClaw migration, and a fix for long Claude DirectSDK answers being cut off. The desktop app doesn’t change until the next bundled release, so this is a CLI update for now. One caution: a vendor-run benchmark from Letta (15 tasks, one attempt each) scored Hermes 26.7% on memory tasks, against 73.3% for Letta’s own agent. Read the source.

Ollama v0.40.9: local speech and Flint on more machines

Ollama’s October 22 release adds Phonon speech generation on Apple Silicon, with an OpenAI-compatible /v1/audio/speech endpoint, so apps can read text aloud without a cloud voice service. Recursive’s Flint coding model (Apache 2.0, 40B mixture-of-experts with about 2.5B active, 262K context) now runs on Linux and Windows, not just macOS. Streaming requests now report failures instead of ending silently. Ollama doesn’t state hardware requirements for Flint. Read the source.

Meet translates 63 languages; Vault exports Gemini chats

Google Meet’s real-time speech translation now covers 63 languages with automatic detection. It’s on by default for eligible editions (Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and others) where Gemini for Meet is enabled, and participants switch it on per call. Rapid Release domains get it from October 22, Scheduled Release from November 2. Google Vault can now export Gemini conversations by user or organizational unit and date range on Business Plus, Enterprise and Education editions or the Vault add-on. Sheets also gets native box and whisker charts for everyone. Use translation for scheduling and internal calls; keep a qualified interpreter where accuracy has legal or medical weight. Claude Code 2.1.309 and Codex CLI 0.164

Claude Code 2.1.309 closes several sandbox and permission gaps, including shell startup files running outside the sandbox, and protects the file passed with --mcp-config. A detail worth knowing from the changelog: Claude Code reads AGENTS.md only in a project with no CLAUDE.md. If you keep both, add @AGENTS.md to CLAUDE.md or change it under “Project instructions” in /config. Codex CLI 0.164.0 adds ten saved /presets, inline /model and /permissions arguments, enterprise MCP sign-in and credential masking in remote shells. Read the source.

Keep API keys out of AI-built apps

Vercel says Marketplace vendors that rely on long-lived secrets instead of OIDC will show a “Not secure” label by November 30, 2026, and be delisted by January 2027. Separately, community posts this week describe public AI-built apps shipping secret keys to every visitor through front-end variables such as VITE_ or NEXT_PUBLIC_. If you shipped a prototype, check that every paid API call runs on a server or edge function. Read the source.

Merchant Center adds conversational attributes

Search Engine Land explains six new Merchant Center attributes, including up to 30 question-and-answer pairs per product, meant to help products surface in AI Mode and Gemini. Merchant Center’s AI performance insights report shows share of voice in conversational shopping queries. Only relevant if you sell products through Google. Read the source.

Business Profile reports, Business Home, and robots.txt

SE Roundtable reports Google is testing redesigned Business Profile performance reports with engagement, reviews, audience and search trend sections, plus top recommendations. Google Business Home, which joins Business Profile, Merchant Center, YouTube and Ads in one place, is in an invite-only beta for select US and UK categories. And Google’s Gary Illyes said robots.txt controls crawling, not what a company does with content it already fetched. Some r/SEO users also report the Search Console Page Indexing report stuck on October 12; Google hasn’t confirmed it, so hold off on reacting to drops after that date. Read the source.

Small-Business Automations

Private invoice extraction: read, check, approve

Several community posts this week describe reading vendor bills with small local vision models through Ollama, and an n8n workflow where the model extracts fields into a strict schema, code checks the math and duplicates, and a person approves before anything is booked. The accuracy figures posted are single-user results we couldn’t verify, so we aren’t repeating them. The pattern itself is sound: let the model read, let code check, let a human sign off. ClickUp shows a new plan lineup

ClickUp’s pricing page currently shows two plan sets: Unlimited at $7 and Business at $12 per user per month (billed yearly), and a newer Core $9, Business $17 and MAX $100 (billed yearly). A user on r/clickup reports an email about a Business plan auto-upgrade. ClickUp hasn’t announced a change that we could find, so check your billing page before your renewal. Read the source.

What we’d do this week

  • If you pay for Claude Team or Max, have an owner link a dedicated Console organization under Billing > API credits, and don’t add purchased credits or auto-reload to it. When the credit runs out, requests stop instead of billing you.
  • Pick one sorting job (inbound email, web-form leads, support tickets) and try it on a decision model before the free Baseten window on Vercel closes on October 27.
  • Workspace admins: decide whether Meet translation should stay on by default, and add Gemini conversations to your Vault retention procedure if you’re on Business Plus or above.
  • If anyone on your team shipped an AI-built app, search its front-end code for API keys this week.
