Daily AI Brief: Claude Design Closes Dec 14, AI Citations Vary (Oct 19)

The most useful news today has a deadline. Anthropic will close the standalone Claude Design site on December 14, 2026. Design systems can be moved into Claude, but chats, comments and public project links will not come with them. If your office built brand kits, mockups or client-facing designs there, spend ten minutes this week deciding what to migrate and what to export.

Standalone Claude Design closes December 14

Anthropic’s help center says the standalone Claude Design site (claude.ai/design) will close on December 14, 2026, and design work moves inside Claude. One migration brings over every design system in your organization, but empty ones and ones built from a starter theme do not migrate. Projects stay in the standalone version until it closes; chats and comments do not carry over and are deleted after closure. Public project links stop working. Organizations with zero data retention cannot turn on artifacts, so they must download projects one at a time using the “Project archive” export. On Team plans, design systems are on by default; on Enterprise they are off by default and an admin has to enable them. Read the source.

Claude Code 2.1.302 changes some defaults

The Claude Code changelog for 2.1.302 says claude -p and Agent SDK sessions with no permission mode set now start in “default” mode on third-party providers when telemetry is off or on a fresh install; --permission-mode auto still works. Fork subagents are now on by default (set CLAUDE_CODE_FORK_SUBAGENT=0 to turn them off), and the desktop app and VS Code run subagents in the background. The changelog is undated, so the release date is unconfirmed. If you run Claude Code on a schedule, set the permission mode explicitly. Read the source.

Cutting Claude Code costs

Several r/ClaudeCode users shared how they cut spend: start a new session for each task, plan with a bigger model and edit with a smaller one, shorten CLAUDE.md, and load only the MCP servers a task needs. These are user reports, not measured results. Read the source.

DeepSeek starts charging for web search and fetch

DeepSeek’s pricing page lists its Search and Fetch APIs at $0.75 per 1,000 successful requests each, with per-request billing starting at 00:00 Beijing time on November 1, 2026. Calls made through DeepSeek Harness, Claude Code or Codex are “currently free of charge.” The page also sets peak hours (01:00–04:00 and 06:00–10:00 UTC, Monday to Friday) and says off-peak rates are half of peak. Budget agent runs as tokens plus search calls, and schedule them off-peak. Read the source.

Lab benchmark scores run higher than independent ones (WATCH)

The whatmodel.sh claims tracker compares 611 lab-reported scores with independent results across 180 models and 103 tests, and finds lab scores 6.4% higher on average (median gap 1.2%). When a launch page quotes a benchmark, look for an independent number before you decide. Read the source.

Google Workspace AI

Google AI Plus loses Pro models on November 13 (WATCH)

gHacks and Android Headlines report a Google One email telling AI Plus subscribers ($4.99 a month) that from November 13, 2026, they can no longer pick Pro models in the Gemini app or AI Mode; Flash and Flash-Lite remain. Pro model selection moves to AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and above, and Gemini 4 Argon is limited to AI Pro and Ultra. This is about consumer Google One plans, not Workspace business plans, and we have not seen a Google help page confirming it yet. Read the source (also Android Headlines).

ChatGPT citations: track sites, run prompts more than once

Search Engine Journal covers an arXiv preprint from the National University of Singapore and Xi’an Jiaotong University that ran 80 questions 20 times each on GPT-5.3 Instant and GPT-5.5 Instant. Google results plus OpenAI’s API matched only 28.3% and 26.2% of the pages ChatGPT cited, but 50.3% and 48.7% of the sites. 44.5% of distinct pages appeared in only one of 20 GPT-5.5 Instant runs. The paper is not peer reviewed, but a single prompt check clearly tells you little. Read the source.

Local Services Ads stop showing featured professionals

Search Engine Roundtable published a Google notice to LSA advertisers: “Starting in October, featured professionals will no longer show on your ads,” and “Headshot is optional and won’t affect ad serving.” Photos and reviews are unchanged. The example came from a lawyer’s account. Read the source.

AI Connectors and Safety

Google OAuth apps in “Testing” break every 7 days

If you built your own Gmail, Drive or Calendar automation, check its OAuth consent screen. Google’s developer docs say that in Testing status “the refresh tokens issued are time-based and expire after 7 days,” and advise publishing the app to avoid it. A Workspace organization can also set the user type to Internal. Free to fix, and it ends the weekly re-login. Read the source (surfaced on r/AI_Agents).

Agent guardrails that silently don’t block

A PreToolUse hook in Codex reads its input as JSON on stdin and must exit with code 2 to block a command; other non-zero exits count as a hook failure and the command still runs, per a Codex hooks guide. Separately, OpenAI’s docs say Codex stops adding AGENTS.md files once their combined size reaches project_doc_max_bytes, 32 KiB by default. Test that every guard actually blocks. Read the source.

llama.cpp v0.7.0: new default port and an MoE cache

llama.cpp v0.7.0 (released October 15) moves llama-server’s default port from 8080 to 9931; Docker images keep 8080 inside the container. A new --moe-cache-mib GPU cache for experts held in system memory claims up to 2.2x faster decode, and RPC gains tensor-parallel support. If a script or firewall rule expects 8080, pin --port. Related advice from r/ollama: never forward Ollama’s port 11434 to the internet, since the API has no key; use a private network such as Tailscale. Read the source.

Hermes Agent

VCC context-compaction plugin

An r/hermesagent user reports that a community plugin, installed with hermes plugins install hermes-vcc-engine --enable, compacts long sessions far faster than the default and recalls earlier steps better. These are the author’s own results from one setup and we could not verify them. Read the source.

Social Media Automation

Comment-to-DM automations built by chatting

Sabrina Ramonov’s guide shows Blotato connected to Claude or ChatGPT, then a prompt that sets a comment keyword, a message and a link. The result is a Facebook or Instagram automation that DMs anyone who comments the keyword, with optional email capture and a webhook to your CRM. It is a possible ManyChat replacement. No pricing is stated, and the creators promoting it have ties to the product. Read the source.

AI Video Tools

Higgsfield CLI with draft renders

Higgsfield’s open-source CLI uses your existing account and credits, signs in through the browser, and needs a paid subscription. In the authors’ test, a 5-second 1080p Seedance clip from a start image cost 80 credits, or 15 with --draft true, and higgsfield generate cost previews the price first. Unlimited and free generations do not apply in the CLI. Read the source.

Small-Business Automations

Catch the automation that “succeeded” but did nothing

An r/n8n post shows a two-node fix: turn on “Always Output Data” on the fetch step, add an IF that checks for a real record, and send an alert from the empty branch. Free with any n8n install. Read the source.

What we’d do this week

  • Open claude.ai/design, list any design systems and projects, migrate the design systems, and export anything shared by public link before December 14.
  • Check every self-built Google integration’s OAuth consent screen. Set it to Internal or publish it so tokens stop expiring weekly.
  • Pick 10 to 20 questions customers actually ask, run each one in ChatGPT several times, and record which websites get cited, not just which pages.
  • If you run scheduled AI jobs, set their permission mode and port numbers explicitly, and load only the connectors each job needs.
