Claude Max vs Ultra: Which Plan an Office Needs Now
If your office runs Claude Code for long stretches, Claude Ultra ($200 a month) now removes the 5-hour usage window for verified accounts and includes $200 a month in API credits. Max ($100) keeps the 5-hour window but adds $100 in credits. Measure your weekly usage before you switch.
Anthropic restructured its individual paid plans this week. This post covers what changed, which step in a typical office AI setup it affects, and how we would decide between the plans. For the rest of the day’s news, see today’s Daily AI Brief.
The workflow
A common small-office setup looks like this: one or two people use Claude in the browser for drafting and research, and someone runs Claude Code for longer jobs such as building internal tools, cleaning up spreadsheets, or running scheduled tasks that summarize documents and email. Small scripts that call the Claude API directly (for example, a form handler that drafts a reply) are billed separately through the Claude Platform.
Until now, two limits shaped that setup. Long Claude Code sessions hit the 5-hour usage window and had to wait, and API scripts were a second bill on top of the subscription.
The task it changes
According to Claude’s pricing page, as checked today:
- Pro: $20 a month billed monthly ($17 a month with annual billing). More usage than Free, every 5 hours and every week.
- Max: $100 a month. “5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week” and “$100 a month in API credits to build on the Claude Platform.”
- Ultra: $200 a month. “No 5-hour limit” for verified accounts, “10x Pro usage every week”, and “$200 a month in API credits.”
The New Stack reports that the old Max 5x plan became Max and Max 20x became Ultra, at the same prices, and that the weekly limit stays in place. Anthropic’s Max plan help article confirms that Max, Ultra and Team plans include monthly credits for the Claude API.
Here is the step we would change in the setup above:
Plan choice and long-running jobs - Pick a plan by feel; split long Claude Code jobs around the 5-hour window - Pay for API scripts on a separate Claude Platform bill + Log weekly usage % for 7 days, then pick Pro, Max or Ultra from the numbers + If usage is heavy and the account is verified, move long jobs to Ultra + Point small API scripts at the included monthly credits first; + add a separate API bill only if the credits run out
What you need
- A Claude subscription. Max and Ultra are billed monthly, per the pricing page FAQ. Prices exclude tax.
- For the lifted 5-hour cap: a verified account. The pricing page footnote limits “No 5-hour limit” to verified accounts. The New Stack reports that verification happens automatically and cannot be requested.
- For the API credits: a Claude Platform account to build on. The pages we read do not say whether unused credits roll over or which API usage they cover, so check before you plan around them.
- For a team: the pricing page lists Team Standard seats at $20 per seat per month billed annually ($25 monthly) and Premium seats at $100 ($125 monthly), with up to $500 a month in pooled API credits.

How we would incorporate it
We would start with a week of measurement, not a plan change. After each heavy session or scheduled run, note the weekly usage percentage shown in Claude’s settings. At the end of the week you will know whether you are hitting the 5-hour window, the weekly cap, or neither.
- Rarely hit either limit: stay on Pro.
- Hit the 5-hour window but not the weekly cap: Max gives five times the Pro allowance in both windows, plus $100 of API credits.
- Long unattended jobs keep stalling on the 5-hour window: Ultra is the plan built for that, once the account is verified.
Then list any scripts that call the Claude API and estimate their monthly spend. If it fits inside the included credits, the subscription now covers what used to be a second bill.
What it is worse at, or does not solve:
- The weekly cap still applies on Ultra. Removing the 5-hour window lets a job run longer in one sitting; it does not make usage unlimited.
- Without a 5-hour window, a runaway agent can spend a large share of the week in one session. Some users on r/ClaudeCode say they now set their own session limits for this reason.
- Verification is automatic and not on request, so you cannot count on the lifted cap on day one.
- These are individual plans. If several staff need heavy use, compare against Team Premium seats and their pooled credits.

Verdict
EVALUATE. For an office that already pays for Max and runs Claude Code for long sessions, Ultra plus its included API credits may now cost less in total than Max plus a separate API bill. The deciding test is seven days of weekly-usage logging on your current plan, compared against Max’s 5x and Ultra’s 10x weekly multiples and your actual API spend. This is the agents’ recommendation from the published terms, not a test result.
